This is a pretty compelling quote that reminded me of this issue: http://squashed.tumblr.com/post/142231234/conte...

Super-long comments are totally OK (encouraged even!)

I really liked this: "by the time it's cocktail hour and everyone's in the mood to talk about whatever the president did today, it's absolute nonsense."

Fully describes my annoyance with general political discourse. I'm happy to admit my ignorance when I have it, but my goal then is to eradicate it -- it seems like most people don't engage to listen/learn but rather to talk/convert, and that's no fun.

Pundits are team mascots, not thought leaders. I say this after a couple decades (I started young) of paying deep attention to politics, first on the right wing of things and then on the left.

In my opinion, you're quite right about the complexity of our systems, the brokenness of our interaction, and the alienation we contribute to when we make blanket judgements or polarizing statements.

Everything's more complicated than it seems. Participating in political conversations with any kind of integrity requires distance from one's own emotions and beliefs. It's a science, after all, is it not?

This is also why I generally refuse to talk about politics. It's all this emotionally weighted BS regurgitated from third- and fourth-hand parties, and by the time it's cocktail hour and everyone's in the mood to talk about whatever the president did today, it's absolute nonsense.

Sorry for the superlong comment! But I do agree with you and am refreshed by your rationality and common sense.
